About the Farm
"Coffee cultivation arrived in the community of Presidio de los Reyes around the year 2000. Local producers had long known these mountains held something special: a distinct microclimate unlike the surrounding lowlands. At elevations between 800 and 1,200 meters, rolling hills shape the flow of air and sunlight, creating a mosaic of temperature and humidity that, together with organically rich soils, provide ideal conditions for growing coffee under shade.
Large native trees form a protective canopy over the coffee plants, offering habitat for a remarkable diversity of bird species. The cooperative’s farmers take pride in conserving these ecosystems, maintaining soil health through contour planting and terracing, and carefully managing shade to preserve wildlife corridors. Many of the coffee plots remain accessible only on foot--a four-hour hike through the forest--a testament to the growers’ commitment to cultivating coffee in harmony with the land rather than clearing it for convenience. Our work is about protecting what gives us life, the soil, the water, the forest, and the birds that call it home.”
- Quote from producer and agronomist Fredy Flores
Featured bird on the finca: Black-throated Magpie-Jay (Cyanocorax colliei)
Feathered fact: Known in Spanish as Urraca de cara negra or de copete. Chosen as the featured bird because it is emblematic of the native Cora people.
